In-Depth Information
Cleveland House, the canal company headquarters .
The canal passes from Wiltshire into Bath & NE Somerset, arriving at Dundas Wharf with
its toll house, small warehouse and cast-iron crane, which worked until the First World War.
At the southern end of the wharf is the narrow entrance to the Somerset Coal Canal, now only
a 500m spur serving as moorings although it was noted for its inclined planes when opera-
tional. At the northern end of the wharf is Dundas Horse Bridge, a Grade II roving bridge
partly from 1794.
Above Claverton church is Claverton Manor of 1820 in Greek revival style by Sir Jeffrey
Wyatville, once owned by a Shaker family. It was the location for Churchill's first political
speech in 1897, when he was 23. It is Europe's only museum of 17-19th century American
domestic life, being partly 17th century itself.
