The beautifully restored lock at Aldermaston Wharf .
The railway crosses back over Pickletimber Bridge and the canal approaches Benham
Lock with a couple of pillboxes. In the summer, a blanket of buttercups extends in the direc-
tion of Enborne. The town is 2km from the River Enborne, which featured as an obstacle to
the rabbits of Watership Down , written by Richard Adams, who was born in Newbury. To the
north is Benham Park, laid out by Capability Brown, the house built 1772-1775.
