The 878m-long Islington Tunnel with no towpath is straight with daylight at the far end. It
was built using a horse-drawn railway along the invert for removing the spoil and was opened
in 1816. From 1826 to the dawn of the 20th century it had a steam tug on a platform like a
railway engine pulling along a chain laid along the bottom of the canal and passing round two
