In-Depth Information
The former Kensal Green Gasworks .
The Penzance to Paddington railway crosses and is never too far from the canal for the rest
of its journey, Brunel having chosen to locate the terminus of his Great Western Railway next
to the canal basin at Paddington.
Each side of the railway are car depots, the one on the offside being surrounded by masses
of barbed wire and causing an enormous traffic jam on the site of the Southall Gasworks,
now represented only by a massive gas holder. It has been used in filming Doctor Who and
The Sweeney . The Mitre Dock and Ticklers Dock belonged to Ticklers, who made jam and
supplied the army during the First World War. The last commercial users of the canal were
biscuit-makers Kearly & Tonge, who received coal deliveries here.
Among the dumped debris, which the blackberry bushes and other vegetation attempt to
disguise, is an overflow weir feeding Yeading Brook. By the A4020 is the Hambrough Tav-
ern, which was burnt down in 1981 race riots between Asian youths and the police.
