In-Depth Information
Ratcliffe Lock picked out in the grass beside its replacement .
Ratcliffe's church dates from the 13th century and has whitewashed walls but it is totally
overwhelmed by the eight cooling towers of the 2GW Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station,
plumes of water vapour climbing skywards to make it more conspicuous over a great dis-
tance, if not improving the visibility for pilots. It was targetted by environmental protesters.
Warm cooling water is pumped into the river. This is the source of the various sets of power-
lines that have been crossing and following the river since Barrow upon Soar.
The River Soar finally discharges into the River Trent just above one of its massive weirs.
The far bank is part of a large island with two locks so craft need to travel upstream for 300m
to Trentlock to go either way on the Trent or up the Erewash Canal.
