In-Depth Information
Railway arches support a retaining wall at Barrow-upon-Soar .
The canal leaves under the A6006, which now has the canal on the north side and a mill
stream and weir stream on the south, confusing as powered craft can use parts of various
channels. The lock channel cuts a corner at Zouch, returning to the river after a lock. The
road runs down the main island, serving the Rose & Crown. A large castle playhouse faces
on to the canal.
Loughborough Boat Club's boathouse is passed and the river flows placidly below a steep
wooded bank, unusual in this valley, towards the Devil's Elbow and the White House pub.
The large hill, which has been visible on the left for some while, carries Castle Donington
and East Midlands Airport. At Kegworth the river is just 3km from the airport's touchdown
runway. Kegworth includes a large house with spacious grounds, a conspicuous dovecote and
a beautiful rock garden. The river and canal separate round a lock island in front of it.
