The Hope & Anchor wharf - busy on a sunny spring day .
A Charnwood Forest branch had also been planned to carry trucks on rafts. Loughborough
is a hosiery town and witnessed Luddite riots. Its November fair dates from the 13th century.
After the junction, the Albion Inn faces the canal, although this was not always the case,
since at the time at which it was built it was a farmhouse facing the other way.
There are two more locks, Loughborough and Bishop Meadow, before the canal rejoins
the River Soar with Nottinghamshire on the far bank and a large industrial estate on the near
side. From here the navigation uses the River Soar continuously to the River Trent, except
for the occasional small loop.
Normanton has a chain ferry. Its buildings include a cruciform church with a 13th century
steeple right next to the river, the Plough Inn, a thatched post office and summer house and a
number of wooden houses that must surely be weekend haunts. It is a most interesting little
village to visit.
