dome to the north is a reminder that Southall has long had the largest southern-Asian popu-
lation outside Asia. There is a significant number of coconuts in the water, evidence of Sikh
funerals.
Beyond Norwood Locks the canal is crossed by the A4127 on Windmill Bridge, named as
such because it was near the site of Southall Mill, famously painted in 1810 by JMW Turner.
It was also called the Three Bridges, which is incorrectly named as it is a road bridge over
a canal aqueduct over a freight railway, the complex designed by Brunel in 1859. Some of
his broad-gauge track is now used as fencing although, unusually, there is an unguarded drop
from the canal to the railway.
