the IODP (International Ocean Drilling Program), to 2.5×2.5×1.875cm
boxes used by the older ODP (Ocean Drilling Program). When using these
boxes, it is critical that the pieces of rock sample in the boxes can't physically
move during measurement, so the sample boxes must be filled completely
and the rock pieces need to be forced into the boxes (Figure 7.3). A different
approach is to drill small cores (11 mm diameter by ~15 mm long) that will fit
in the high field coil of an impulse magnetizer for application of isothermal
remanent magnetizations (IRMs). Small plastic cylindrical sample holders
(11 mm diameter by 20 mm long) can also be used and filled tightly with
small pieces of rock sample. The small diameter coils or plastic cylindrical
sample holders must be measured in most rock magnetometers by being
placed in standard 2×2×2cm plastic sampling boxes (Figure 7.4). Each
