Use Alpha: Enabled (

panel)
The clouds texture is also straighforward. As we have an image with a proper alpha
channel, we just need to enable its use and everything works correctly. Noice the
usage of the
Premultiply
opion in the
Image
panel. This is commonly needed for
PNG images to be handled correctly by Blender.

The fourth and last texture for this material must be named 'bump', its
Type
set to
Image or Movie
, and its other seings made as follows:

Blend: Mix
As we can see, the bump map texture is applied to the Normal channel of the material.
Noice that we use a negaive value to get the correct efect.
That's it for the
planetEarth
object. As we have very good quality textures, we just need to
map them properly without having to create complicated setups. Now is a good ime to save
the file.
Once done with the planet, let's create the disk that will allow us to create the
atmospheric effect.

Go to the 3D View and add a new circle (
Add
→
Mesh
→
Circle
; remember to
be in
Object Mode
). In the seings for the circle (Tool Shelf, lower part), let's set
the verices value to 12 and enable the ill opion to get a disc. Now let's go to the
Object
tab in the
Properties Editor
and set it as follows:
