Teatro alla Scala
Stendhal had an attack of his very own syndrome: a
fainting dizziness and confusion brought on by an ex-
cess of culture - on meeting Byron in a Marquis' box
at La Scala in 1816. Modern renovations may have
taken place behind the scenes (superior acoustics and
bilingual libretto screens on the back of seats), but
the theatre's charm remains resolutely of the 18th
century. 'Opera remains the most boring thing in the
world,' opined Stendhal, 'if it doesn't succeed in mak-
ing us day dream about the secret sorrows that disturb the most apparently happy
lives.'
