The Crypt
From the ambulatory that encircles the choir are the stairs down to the crypt or
Winter Choir. Also designed by Tibaldi, this jewel-like circular chapel with its red
porphyry pillars, polychrome marble floor and stucco ceiling contains a casket
holding the relics of various saints and martyrs. A wooden choir stall encircles the
room.
Scurolo di San Carlo
Through a gap in the crypt's choir stalls, a dark corridor heads to the depths of the
cathedral and a memorial chapel housing the remains of the saintly Carlo Bor-
romeo, cardinal archibishop of Milan (1564-84). They're contained in a fabulous
rock crystal casket atop a silver altar.
