Safe Travel
Milan is a safe and affluent destination, although like any major city pickpocketing
can be an issue at busy train stations and the Piazza di Duomo. If you're the vic-
tim of theft or crime, simply find the nearest police station and report the incident.
For insurance purposes you'll need to fill in any relevant forms. For lost or stolen
passports contact your embassy.
Telephone
Top Tip… If you need to make cheap calls, or if you want to have a number
where you can be easily reached, buy an Italian SIM card and pop it into your
phone. You can buy them, and activate the number, at any mobile-phone service
shop.
Italy uses GSM 900/1800, which is compatible with the rest of Europe and Aus-
tralia but not with North American GSM 1900 or the Japanese system.
Mobile Phones
To buy a SIM card you'll need to supply your passport and the address of your
accommodation.
The main mobile phone providers are TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile), Wind and
Vodafone.
