Giro d'Italia
Around Lake Como you'll often espy groups of weekend cyclists kitted out as champi-
ons. Just as in any elegant Milan bar, locals like to do things with class. Many follow
routes that have been used as stages of the nation's great cycle race, the Giro d'Italia.
Second only to the Tour de France, the Giro has drawn champions from around the
world since its inauguration in 1909. A time trial stage in Milan is tradition.

Sorico, the most northerly of the towns, guards the mouth of the River Mera,
which flows into shallow Lake Mezzola, once part of Lake Como and now a bird-
breeding nature reserve. Follow the river to the tiny Oratorio di San Fedelino ,
with its 1000-year-old fresco of Christ and the Apostles. It's only accessible on foot
or by boat from Sorico. (
