Getting There
Train Services from Milan's Stazione Centrale and Porta Garibaldi stations run
hourly services to Como San Giovanni station. Trains from Milan's Stazione Nord ar-
rive at Como's lakeside Stazione FNM ('Como Nord Lago' on timetables).
Boat Ferries and hydrofoils on the lake are run by Navigazione Lago di Como (
800 55 18 01; www.navigazionelaghi.it ) . There are ticket booths in each town next to the
embarkation quay.
The Sights in a Day
For optimal access to all the lake sites, base yourself in Bellagio. Here
your morning coffee run will involve a walk through Villa Melzi's ( Click
here ) elegant lakeside gardens to Piazza Mazzini where you can board the hydro-
foil for the gardens of Varenna's Villa Monastero ( Click here ) , the sculptures in
Tremezzo's Villa Carlotta ( Click here ) or the shops and sites of Como.
On your way to Como, lunch at Ittiturismo da Abate ( Click here ) , the
only remaining fishing concession on the lake. Be sure to book ahead out
of season, as they may be out fishing. In Como take the pleasant lakefront stroll,
Passeggiata di Lino Gelpi, past waterfront mansions to arrive on the doorstep of
Villa Olmo ( Click here ) where you can wander the gardens, enjoy world-class art
or laze around the scenic swimming pool ( Click here ) .
For sunset take a seaplane ( Click here ) over the lake or head up to Brun-
ate in the cable car ( Click here ) for panoramic views. Then for dinner, re-
serve a table beside the hearth or on the terrace at Al Veluu ( Click here ) and watch
the lights on the lake twinkle like stars.
