The Sights in a Day
Toss a coin to determine which palace to start the day with: for romance
and intimate family details opt for Palazzo Madre ( Click here ) and for
history, art and ostentation try Palazzo Borromeo ( Click here ), where Prince
Charles and Princess Diana holidayed in 1985 as guests of the Borromei family.
For lunch make sure you've booked in for fine lakeside dining at Ristor-
ante Milano ( Click here ) , Lo Scalo ( Click here ) or Taverna del Pittore
( Click here ) , where you should order Lake Maggiore's speciality trout or char and a
bottle of wine from nearby Franciacorte vineyards.
After lunch plan on taking it easy with an amble through the tropical hot-
houses and camellia groves of Villa Taranto ( Click here ). Then make the
short hop over to Intra for evening aperitivo at La Bottiglieria del Castello ( Click
here ) or movie-star cocktails on the terrace of the Grand Hotel des Iles Bor-
romées ( Click here ) .
If you're in town on Sunday, or visiting during the month of August, take the fast boat to
Cannobio's lakeside market ( Click here ) and check out Locarno's Festival Internazionale
di Film ( Click here ) , where you can kick back in front of the open-air screen in Piazza
Grande.
