Lago Maggiore & Around
More than its neighbours, Lago di Como and Garda, Lago Maggiore has
retained the belle époque air of its early tourist heyday, when Napoleon
first came to town and ordered the building of the Simplon Pass through
the Alps to Switzerland. Attracted by the mild climate and easy access, the
European haute bourgeoisie flocked to buy and build grand lakeside villas
and established a series of extraordinary gardens around its shores.
