Leonardo da Vinci Gallery
In 1481 Leonardo da Vinci wrote to Ludovico Sforza applying for a position at
court. He had been recommended as a musician, but he promoted himself as an
engineer, promising the duke he could build him all manner of war machines, im-
prove the castle fortifications, tinker with the city's canal system and, if there was
nothing else to do, he could always paint the Duke's mistresses. He filled dozens of
notebooks with sketches, models of which line the Leonardo gallery.
