Local Life
Chinatown
Bramante. The Chinese community has deep roots in the city, with families that settled
here in the 1920s and '30s.
While Milan likes to think of itself as Italy's most multicultural city, casual racism or
the flip fetishism of fashionland is a common response to questions of ethnic identity.
Tensions exploded in 2007, following police harassment of local textile workers, and a
demonstration that turned into a riot was met with a flurry of anti-immigration senti-
ment. But hard work and harmony is the usual order of the day.
The area is a good shopping alternative, too. Pick up bargain clothing, leatherwear
and electrical goods, as well as Asian produce.
