Arco della Pace
Napoleon's 25m-high triumphal 'Arch of Peace', designed by Luigi Cagnola in
1807, was built on the site of the Roman Porta Giovia (Gate of Jupiter). It
marks the start of Corso Sempione that connects Milan to Paris, via the Sim-
plon (Sempione) Pass. Ironically, its neoclassical facade is graced with bas-re-
liefs not of Napoleon's victories, as was intended, but with scenes from the
Battle of Leipzig (1813), depicting Napoleon's defeat, and the Congress of Vi-
enna (1815), which redrew the post-Napoleonic map of Europe.
