Oratorio di Mocchirolo
To the left side of the entrance hall in Room IA is a reconstruction of the oratory of
Mocchirolo and its splendid fresco cycle, thought to be the work of Giotto. Particu-
larly notable is the Crucifixion scene, which displays Giotto's typically strong sense
of visual narrative and expressive realism.
Bellini & Mantegna
The works of Giovanni Bellini and Andrea Mantegna, displayed in room VI, are
some of the highlights of the Pinacoteca's Venetians. Like Bramante before him,
Mantegna had a passion for rigorous perspective and a love of classicism that com-
bined to create the stunningly unsentimental Lamentation over the Dead Christ,
with its violent foreshortening of Christ's corpse. Although influenced by
Mantegna, Bellini's sad-eyed Madonnas and exquisitely tender Pietà demonstrate
