Lombard Frescoes
The Brera collection starts with a blast of Renaissance brilliance, launching you
down a corridor lined with Donato Bramante's Men at Arms and Bernardino
Luini's frescoes from the suppressed church of La Pace and Casa Pelucca. While
Luini's tableau of girls playing 'hot-cockles' and the Easter feast illustrate the in-
fluence of Leonardo da Vinci - blending Renaissance innovations with indigenous
Milanese scenes - Bramante's soldiers, meant for the Barons' Hall at Casa Vis-
conti, define a new understanding of illusionistic perspective. Viewed from below
(as they would have been in the hall), the figures loom upwards, their gigantic
forms emerging from architectural frames.
