Puppets
What is this need to have such curious things as puppets? Why do we respond so deeply to a
puppet? All great art forms, both high art and low culture, have at least one major dalliance
with a puppet, or at least inanimate characters impossibly coming to life. Literature has
Pinocchio and Frankenstein ; myths have the Golem and Prometheseus ; Opera has The Tales
of Hof man ; dance has Petruschka and Coppelia ; cinema has simply dozens ranging from
Metropolis through Dead of Night , Chucky and Mannequin , to The Iron Giant . The appeal
of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (and The Love Bug ) is based on an inanimate object supposedly
having life, and that the best present for Baron Bomburst is a couple of living dolls.
Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes as the living puppets in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Richard
Haynes).
Likewise in Mary Poppins , the most exciting day out is spent in the company of animated
