Ballet of
Edward II
- the fi rst time I'd seen ballet as a masculine, sexy, raunchy, tutu-less thing.

A prayer for Owen Meany
, my favourite topic.

Frank Lloyd Wright.
●
Gaudi, for his incredible vision verging on folly.
DS
- I was overwhelmed by seeing
Lawrence of Arabia
as child. It had a profound infl uence on me because
of its scope, scale and emotional power. I didn't understand the role of the director at the time (or for
many years afterwards) or indeed the scriptwriter but what I
saw
made me want to know more about
cinematography and how these things were shot. Freddie Young was a hero; I never got to meet him.

sore backs!
●
The Stones, Knebworth House - pure drama, spectacle, comradeship.
●
Warhol exhibition, Tate Modern.
