Ballet of Edward II - the fi rst time I'd seen ballet as a masculine, sexy, raunchy, tutu-less thing.
Harvey with Ben Keaton, Royal Exchange. I love the fi lm, and this production, especially Ben's
performance, equalled it.
Halle Orchestra playing Bond themes.
Amélie - restored my faith in cinema. Loved its oddness, romance and fantasy.
John Irvine - A prayer for Owen Meany , my favourite topic.
Preservation Hall Jazz, New Orleans. I went backpacking, ending in this tatty but famous little venue.
Sat on the fl oor and had my socks knocked off by the gig.
Frank Lloyd Wright.
Gaudi, for his incredible vision verging on folly.
DS - I was overwhelmed by seeing Lawrence of Arabia as child. It had a profound infl uence on me because
of its scope, scale and emotional power. I didn't understand the role of the director at the time (or for
many years afterwards) or indeed the scriptwriter but what I saw made me want to know more about
cinematography and how these things were shot. Freddie Young was a hero; I never got to meet him.
AC -
Othello - Ian McKellen as Iago, the Other Place - McKellen was totally mesmerising.
The Tempest at the Rollright stones at midnight, just because it was so weird, Mark Rylance.
Twelfth Night , The Globe, Mark Rylance - Rylance again being astonishing, full dramatic performance
on stage (music dancing, frocks); full dramatic performance offstage, standing, eating, talking,
sore backs!
The Stones, Knebworth House - pure drama, spectacle, comradeship.
Warhol exhibition, Tate Modern.
Visit to the pyramids and National Museum, Cairo.
Philoctetes - Cheek by Jowl .
Hamlet , the Roundhouse - Marianne Faithful.
Pasolini - Oedipus , Medea , fi lms.
