Directing
My most recent work, directing 52 episodes of Rupert Bear for Entertainment Rights and
Cosgrove Hall - 2007.
Directors
There are two types of director: those who assemble and those who direct. Putting a i lm
together is not the same as directing it. The best a director can do is to make every shot
interesting and make it count, and the worst is to make a dull i lm.
Many i lms comprise a series of shots put next to each other in a pedestrian manner.
No director should make his presence felt with an egotistical display of showy tricks and l ashy
camera angles, but I think that the director should use and combine all the elements of
i lm-making, lighting, colour, design, editing, sound, movement, music, etc., pushing them, well
directing them, to illuminate the script, the narrative, the characters and emotions as clearly as
possible. Directing is not necessarily about having something profound to say, but more about
making whatever you do say interesting. Many i lms have something interesting to say, but lack
