rhythm, which is easily done if the animator is not yet seeing movement as a performance. All
movement needs to build and slow, but if this is done clumsily the puppets look as though
they are animating in syrup, with nothing clear or dei ned, constantly moving without much
ef ect. The best animation has dynamics and clarity, with every shape clean and readable, and
animated to the camera, making the best of its shapes, with every acceleration and slowing
down absolutely clean.
Dance
I'm forever trying to get animators to experience dance in all forms. There does seem a
resistance, as there seems a general resistance to most things live or cultural. I'm not sure why
this is, but dancers are doing exactly what we are doing: telling stories, and expressing ideas
and emotions through the movement of their bodies. Any understanding of dance can only
help an animator. Of all forms of dance, I would recommend tango and ballet.
The dramatic body language of tango (Susan Guy).
Ballet l ows like no other dance, and you will seldom see more grace or cleaner
lines, but tango is the most exhilarating, sensual and dramatic of dance. Every
limb tells a drama, with movements from sharp, angular shapes, through the
softly sensual, to the amazingly extended openness of the body. In every step
there is a strong through line between the dancers, making uncluttered, easily
readable shapes. Through the fantastic compositions and rhythm, you know what
the dancers are feeling. They connect with each other, and respond to each other.
