The cell width
The cell width essentially determines the resolution of spatial information the influence
map can contain. While the cell height can dramatically reduce the memory footprint
without losing much spatial information, the same cannot be said about the cell width.
Here, an influence map is generated with a cell width of two meters with specific influen-
ces set, shown by the blue and red regions:
A cell width of 2.0 meters
The same influence map is generated in the following screenshot with a cell width of one
meter. Even though the positions of influences remain the same in both examples, the res-
ulting influence maps are not equivalent. The low resolution influence map lost informa-
tion as multiple influence points happened to fall within the same cell, essentially contrib-
uting no additional influence.
