What is BI self-service?
Over the last 15 to 20 years, data warehouses and BI have been rolled out to end users and
power users in many companies. The problem is that long delivery times for IT report de-
velopment have caused end users and power users to create their own reporting solutions,
often in Excel. BI self-service uses the BOBJ tools to empower users to effectively move
their reporting efforts into the official SAP BOBJ tools. The latest versions of BI 4.1 tools
have been simplified and streamlined to allow power users and end users to develop their
own reports. This results in a much shorter development cycle and increases your company's
ability to adapt to its ever-changing business needs.
SAP interviewed users from various roles in organizations using SAP to discover how they
were managing reporting while waiting for IT to develop official reports. They found that
the users were spending around 80% of their time manually combining data, transforming it
as needed, and even doing calculations which had to be verified repeatedly before meeting
their ad hoc reporting needs.
In order to streamline this process, SAP developed BO Explorer for managers. Visual Intel-
ligence, renamed as Lumira in the latest versions, was developed as a simplified solution for
analysts. You can expect these tools to become better integrated, with improved capabilities,
over the next couple of years.
