In-Depth Information
After the upgrade to BW 7.4 and migration to HANA, the first functional test cycle must
be completed and the results must be presented to the core team. The core team will then
resolve the issues reported, and a new test cycle will begin. After the second round of test-
ing has been completed, if there are no issues, the push to production can begin. However,
if serious issues are still present, they must be resolved and those resolutions validated by
executing another full test cycle.
Don't rush!
Remember, this is the last chance to resolve problems before they
impact the business, so do not rush this portion of the project! This is
the perfect opportunity to use the contingency time built into the pro-
ject plan to add test cycles, but do NOT rush the push to production.
2.5.6
Production environment
If the previous environment upgrades were completed properly, the upgrade and migration
of the production environment should be reasonably easy. This portion of the project should
only begin when the QA environment upgrade and migration has been completed success-
fully and the project team has approved the push to production in the final checkpoint.
Before the upgrade and migration of the production environment, verify that an accurate
and current copy of the production environment is saved to the company's disaster recovery
solution. This is the project lifeline in case things go wrong during the migration and up-
grade of production, so DO NOT skip this step.
The migration and upgrade of production should generally take place over a long weekend
(such as Labor Day in the United States). A specific and detailed timeline must be deve-
loped before this phase begins. The timeline should include checkpoints every 12 to 24
hours, during which the project manager and project sponsor must decide whether or not to
move forward with the process, or to restore from backup.
