Contingency planning!
It is absolutely critical that the project plan contains a contingency
time plan. No project manager has the ability to foresee every pos-
sible problem that can arise, and building a few days of contingency
time into each phase of the project will allow the project team time
to adjust to these unforeseen problems.
2.5.1
Onboarding and setup
During the first two to four weeks of a DMO project, the project plan must be written by
the project manager with support from the stakeholders and project sponsor. The leaders
of each project team must also develop detailed work plans for each phase of the project.
Once the project plan is finalized and milestones are established for each phase, any change
that will impact the project budget or milestone will require a change request and approval
from the project sponsor. The test team leads should also develop their test plans during this
phase of the project, with the understanding that further test plans may be required based
on the results of the initial unit tests.
Project risk!
The most likely point of failure in any HANA migration is caused by
failing to adequately plan for hardware procurement and delivery,
infrastructure setup, and data center preparation. Currently, hard-
ware procurement usually requires six to eight weeks, so select and
procure the hardware before the project begins.
By this time, the Basis team should have verified that the environments to be migrated
meet the prerequisites for a DMO migration. If enhancement packages or service packs are
needed, these must be applied and the system must be stabilized before the migration.
