Staffing
Staffing needs for the DMO migration will depend on the size of the project. Several scen-
arios are possible and examples are given based on staffing needs determined during real
projects. DMO projects will generally fall into one of three categories: small, medium, and
large/very large.
2.2.1
Small projects
Migrations of less than approximately 5 TB of data (before migration) and of medium com-
plexity are considered small projects. For small projects, the work is best divided between
the core team and the test team. The core team for a small project should consist of the pro-
ject manager, a BW Basis support person, a HANA Basis support person, a HANA deve-
loper for modelling and optimization, and a HANA test lead. The test team should consist
of a functional tester for each business area included in the migration.
Figure 2.2: A small DMO project team
For this project, the total project time was 14 weeks. The company was using a four-system
landscape with sandbox, development, acceptance, and production environments and had an
additional system on hot standby providing disaster recovery. During the project, the com-
pany transitioned from BWA 7.0 to HANA as part of the migration. This had the added be-
nefit of allowing the company to retire the license for BWA for a lower total cost of owner-
ship.
During the project referenced in Figure 2.2, the test team was assigned during the nine weeks
of the migration to the QA and production environments. The test team consisted of exper-
ienced users for the BW system who needed very little training to execute the test plans for
the migration. Also, only the InfoCubes from SD were optimized during this migration.
