Chapter 2 provides proven techniques for planning a successful SAP BW on HANA migra-

Columnar architectures provide a 7-9x compression factor

The SAP HANA database uses columnar architecture which stores
data much more efficiently than a traditional RDBMS. The data
volume on disk in column store tables is usually 7-9x compressed
compared to row store. When loaded into memory, SAP HANA needs
twice as much space for temporary computations, so typical compres-
sion ratios for HANA are 3-4x when taking both columnar architecture and memory re-
quirements into account.
