Bringing it all together with DMO
The options for migrating SAP BW to HANA before DMO had many manual steps and,
therefore, multiple points of failure. In order to migrate to HANA, a complicated sequence
of tasks, each of which could be a single project in its own right, was required. First, a
Unicode migration would require an export and import of the database. Second, an upgrade
to SAP BW 7.40 would be necessary to meet the technical requirements for HANA func-
tionality. Third, the migration to HANA would complete the sequence. The DMO process
combines all these disparate tasks into one project with a measure of control and support by
SAP. The simplification of the migration path using DMO is illustrated in Figure 1.1.

With DMO, any necessary upgrades, Unicode conversion, and database migration can be
completed in one step with the SAP Upgrade Manager. There is no longer any need to ex-
ecute each task in the migration manually as a separate task.
The DMO process also improves on the old migration processes by requiring less business
downtime. Only having one project allows the final cutover to take place in less time instead
of requiring outages at several different times throughout the year as each portion of the pro-
ject was completed.
