Additional migration considerations
Before an existing SAP BW system can be migrated to SAP HANA, the old reporting
authorizations must be migrated to 7.x analysis authorizations. This is a prerequisite step
which must be included in all migration projects, unless, of course, it has already been com-
pleted.
Before upgrading to SAP BW 7.40, all BEx 3.x queries and web templates must be mi-
grated to BEx 7.x. With SAP BW 7.40, BEx 3.x objects are no longer supported. Failure
to migrate these objects can result in query or report errors which cannot, or will not, be
resolved by SAP support.
After the migration to SAP HANA, existing data flows adhering to LSA should be optim-
ized for HANA using LSA++. While a data volume optimization effort is not required to
realize the performance benefits HANA offers, it will serve to improve the returns the in-
vestment in HANA will generate.

Migration without optimization
The most common choice for companies that want to eliminate dependencies from their
migration project is to not consider optimization as part of their project objectives. This
option leaves the same functional BW system in place and merely moves all of the content
to the HANA platform. While this is the fastest option for performing a BW to HANA
migration, it has the downside of being tied to the old LSA architecture. There will still
be significant performance increases due to the speed of the HANA in-memory columnar
architecture, but this option does not fully implement the simplified landscape that is avail-
able with SAP HANA.

Migration with optimization
This option includes both a technical and functional upgrade in one project. This project
takes longer to implement as there is much more development and testing required, but it
provides additional performance benefits by moving to the new LSA++ architecture. When
this option is chosen, the longer project time is used for optimization of all data flows and
