Security conversion
Some companies did not convert to the new security model in SAP BW 7.x when they up-
graded from older versions of BW because the conversion was not required when moving to
BW 7.0. If your company is one of those that did not convert to the new security authoriz-
ation model, you will have to perform the security conversion as part of the DMO process,
since SAP BW 7.4 requires the new authorization model.
The good news is that there are significant benefits to your company in moving to the new
security authorization model. SAP BW 7.3 introduced the ability to make mass authoriza-
tion changes instead of having to complete each change one at a time. With the ability to cut
and paste within a worklist or hierarchy node, as well as the ability to add users to multiple
analysis authorizations at once, you will find authorizations much easier to manager.
Check the notes!
There are numerous SAP Notes with more information about changes
to authorizations in the latest versions of SAP BW. See SAP Notes
931898, 938871, 946724, 958665, and 1001652 for more informa-
tion.
As of SAP BW 7.0, passwords became case-sensitive, so do not be surprised if some users
complain that their passwords are no longer working correctly. For most of these users, they
will have most likely created their original passwords with a mix of uppercase and lowercase
letters, but forgot this because the old authorization models were not case-sensitive. Since
the security manager can force a password reset, this should be nothing more than a minor
nuisance.
In SAP BW 7.4, you gain the ability to log read access for specific domains and users, and
you can even monitor access to specific fields. Also, as of Solution Manager 7.1, you can
monitor all the operating processes within your BW system.
