Lamego (1938) clearly envisaged a similar situation obtaining in the Rio de Janeiro region, and
Gilbert (1904), the author of the pressure release hypothesis, is quoted by Dale (1923) as suggest-
ing that Stone Mountain in Georgia was due to compressive strains. Several other geologists who
examined granitic domes in the northeastern United States deduced that the granites involved are
