absence of salt weathering or its being overshadowed by other, more rapidly acting, processes such
as hydration and hydrolysis causing the destruction, e.g. of the visor, is not clear. Tafoni are well-
developed in Galicia, not only in humid coastal areas but also inland, where hydration and hydro-
lysis may assume a greater role in their development.
So strong is the link between climate and landform thought to be in some instances, that climatic
changes have been predicated on the basis of the relationship (Twidale and Lageat, 1994). Thus,
Granitrillen, developed and preserved in the Karkonosze uplands of southwestern Poland, have
been attributed to Tertiary humid climates, on the assumption that they could not have formed in
moderately humid or periglacial climates (Migon and Dach, 1995), though this deduction is called
