coastal settings see page 313. Like their granitic counterparts, some flutings in limestone originate
beneath the land surface (Fig. 12.9a), as do gutters in sandstone ( Fig. 12.13) . Similarly, caves are
synonymous with carbonate and gypseous formations, but, though present in a few granitic
masses, they are not so common and well-developed. Though well represented in granitic terrains,
siliceous speleothems are also widely developed in some sandstone settings, e.g. the Flinders
