alveoles found on the interior walls and ceilings of tafoni are larger (10-15 cm diameter) than
those preserved on exposed surfaces (2-3 cm diameter). This may be a function of the protected
environment within tafoni, where the hollows can extend, as compared with exposed sites where
alveoles are destroyed before there is time for them to grow. But also, it is evident that the sizes of
the alveoles are related to the grain size of the rock: fine grained rocks give small alveoles while
coarse grained rocks give big alveoles. The development of convex sheet surfaces produces a
ribbed and mamillated/scalloping effect which is another characteristic internal morphology of
