are found on both the northern and southern sides of residuals, but are particularly well-developed
on the latter in southern Australia, though there are exceptions. They are developed on boulders as
well as on larger residuals and within clefts as well as marginal to hills and boulders ( Fig. 8.4).
They are preferentially exposed on the downslope side of hills and boulders. Flared slopes also
occur in subhorizontal zones well above the present plain level, as well as in joint clefts.
Excavations and bores on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, and in Western Australia have shown
that they are incipiently developed in the scarp-foot zones of residual hills, beneath the present
