retreat or differential rock disintegration. Linton (1955, 1964) attributed the Dartmoor tors or kop-
pies to differential compartment weathering under humid, tropical conditions and subsequent
exposure of the upstanding residuals by solifluxion and cold-climate processes generally. According
to Demek (1964) the koppies of Bohemia are Fernlinge remaining after scarp retreat, but he reached
conclusions similar to those of Linton (1964) regarding the processes and mechanisms involved.
Cold conditions have also been invoked in explanation of koppies on the Iberian Peninsula. Frost
action could have further shattered and mobilised the earlier developed regolith, to cause further
steepening of the masses of fresh rock protruding into the regolith. Alternatively, freeze-thaw
