Thus, the two-stage mechanism, though an oversimplification of reality, is consistent with the
known distribution, global, regional and local, of bornhardts. They can be expected to occur wher-
ever and w henever structural conditions are suitab le, regardless of climate, to be e xposed in a
range of topographic situations, in uplands and plains, on di vides, in valley sides and in v alley
floors.
