and for this reason, plus their frequency of occurrence and widespread distribution, bornhardts are
first analysed as the basic form from which some of the others are derived. Nubbins, koppies and
other uplands are discussed in Chapter 7.
6.2 BORNHARDT CHARACTERISTICS
Bornhardts are domical hills with bare rock e xposed over most of the surface ( Fig. 6.2). Though
essentially domical, man y are be velled ( Fig. 6.5). They occur in oro gens as w ell as cratonic
regions, in hilly terrains and uplands as well as lowlands and plains. They are well-developed in
granite (Whitlow, 1978-9) and several other rock types, though only in those that are massive (see
Chapter 12).
Bornhardts a re not restricted to an y par ticular climatic en vironment but occur in most
climatic regimes, from arid to humid, hot to cold (Godard, Lagasquie and Lageat, 1994) (Fig. 6.6).
Inselbergs are restricted neither to the tropics, nor to arid and semi-arid lands, though thy are well
