Belle Haven to Old Town
Follow the marshes along the Potomac River to Old Town Alexandria. Spend some time walking
through the streets of this historic city before heading back on the Mount Vernon Trail. The hike can be
done in reverse, but parking in Old Town is not as easy. If you start in Old Town, join the trail at Union
Street and Jefferson Street, and head south.
Distance: 4.2-mile lollipop (longer if time is spent walking around Old Town)
Approximate hiking time: 3 hours; more if extra time is spent in Old Town
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail surface: Mostly paved; some gravel
Best seasons: Year-round
Other trail users: Cyclists, runners
Canine compatibility: Leashed dogs permitted

Schedule: Trail always open; parking lot closes at dusk

can get very crowded on weekends.

Finding the trailhead: On the George Washington Memorial Parkway heading south
from Alexandria and the Capital Beltway, turn left into the parking lot for Belle Haven
Park and Marina. This hike begins on the Mount Vernon Trail, which runs between the
