The Hike
Rock Creek Park is a true urban oasis. Right in the middle of the city, you can head into the woods on
foot or horseback, see fall colors, hear nothing but birds and rushing water, and smell earthy fresh air.
Washingtonians can see brilliant fall colors and early spring blossoms without leaving the city.
The horse center at Rock Creek Park offers boarding, trail rides, riding lessons, and a therapeutic rid-
ing program. President Reagan, an avid horseman, often came here to ride. You will probably see some
horses around the stable as you begin this hike. Following the path from the horse center, join the trail,
which takes you through woods of hardwood trees, tulip poplars, and beeches.
The portion of the creek that is to the left of the trail is one of the most scenic parts of the park. This
section of the creek flows over granite boulders, once part of an ancient mountain that separated the
piedmont plateau from the coastal plain. The rocks create a series of rapids, which can be best seen
from Rapids Bridge. Walk across to get the best view before returning to the trail.
The trail continues uphill, under Ross Drive, and then back to the stables and the trailhead.
