National Arboretum: West
Side
This walk through the western side of the National Arboretum is especially vibrant during spring when
the azaleas and daffodils are in bloom.
Distance: 2.1-mile loop, with an out-and-back spur to the summit of Mount Hamilton
Approximate hiking time: 2 hours
Difficulty: Moderate due to the climb up to Mount Hamilton
Trail surface: Mostly paved, some natural surfaces
Best seasons: Year-round
Other trail users: Cyclists, cars, and tour tram on paved portions
Canine compatibility: Leashed dogs permitted

Schedule: Daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Dec. 25

Finding the trailhead: By car: Take Constitution Avenue east past the Capitol Build-
ing. At Maryland Avenue, bear left and follow this to Bladensburg Road. Drive about 1
mile to R Street and turn right. The entrance gates are about 2 blocks ahead. Park in the
main lot just inside the gates and near the visitor center. Via Metro: Take the Blue or
Orange line to Stadium-Armory. From here, take the B2 bus and get off at Bladensburg
Road and Rand Place. Walk 1 block back to R Street, turn left, and walk 2 blocks to the
