FIG 18. The 'Patella beach' at Foxhole, near Southgate. (Harold Grenfell)
The last glaciation, known as the Devensian, which reached a maximum about 18,000 years ago, des-
troyed many of the features created by the previous glaciation and is responsible for most of the glacial
landforms preserved in Gower today (Table 4). This time all of the ice was derived from Wales and
large glaciers occupied Carmarthen and Swansea bays. Mammals typical of the Devensian period include
mammoth Mammuthusprimigenius ,woollyrhino Coelodontaantiquitatis ,horse Equuscaballus ,reindeer
Rangifer tarandus , arctic fox Alopex lagopus , spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta and abundant small mam-
mals such as arctic lemming Dicrostonyx torquatus .
