down traffic. Some cattle have also been fitted with reflective collars, in an attempt to reduce the number
of road accidents and cattle deaths, many of which are caused by excessive speeds and the near-invisib-
ility of black cattle at night. Much of the heathland has been restored successfully and rare habitats have
been conserved, in addition to significant archaeological sites such as hut circles. Crucially, the project
has successfully tackled the issue of burning and in an innovative partnership with the Fire Service has
developed a management approach that will ensure the previous widespread and damaging burns are a
thing of the past. This has not, however, prevented serious damage caused by an illegal burn on the east
slope of Rhossili Down, which will take years to recover.
