The lapwing Vanellus vanellus and curlew Numenius arquata may have gone from the Downs, but
GowerstillhasagreaterdensityofconservationdesignationsthanalmostanywhereelseinBritain.There
are three National Nature Reserves, three Local Nature Reserves, five Special Areas of Conservation
and over twenty-five Sites of Special Scientific Interest. There are also nineteen Geological Conservation
Review Sites, of national and international importance to earth science, on the coast alone. It is difficult
to find a part of the peninsula that does not carry at least one designation.
