Nextinthesuccessionarethefixedorgreydunes,sonamedbecausetheyhavebeenmainlystabilised
by a covering of vegetation, do not move like the mobile dunes and lack large areas of bare sand. They
include a number of habitats such as dune heath, dune grassland and dune scrub. Bloody crane's-bill, a
scarce plant in Britain, but which is locally common in Gower, is a particularly striking and attractive
featureofthefixeddunes(Fig.77)andisoftenassociated withburnetrose
Rosa pimpinellifolia
anddew-
berry
Rubus caesius
in a distinctive plant community found in very few other places in Britain. Unfortu-
nately Japanese rose
Rosa rugosa
has recently become established on a number of dune systems in South
Wales and if it spreads widely could seriously affect the viability of this community.
